Bobapalooza

What a long strange trip its been

Ok this weekend was just full of surprises. Friday night Rugby Dude and I met up with a group of friends to see a band at the Bluebird Theater. Actually there were two bands playing but we went mainly to see The Hourly Radio a band from Dallas that our friend Sam had seen before and loved. They were fantastic and I recommend them to everyone; sort of a New Order slash Killers sound. Check out their website for free downloads. However we were surprised to find out that they were not the headliners, a band called IAmX was the main show. That explained all the freaky little “mod” teenagers there. We decided to hang out to check them out. At first I thought they were scary, the lead singer was kind of a freak in speeded up motion, but they grew on me. Good beats, and they put on a great show. We left after their encore and went next door to the Adult shop and messed around like silly teenagers. Our friends are so much fun.

The next morning I decided to check out the band websites. Come to find out, the lead singer of IAmX is actually Chris Corner from the band Sneaker Pimps! I couldn’t believe it. I used to love the Sneaker Pimps, they came out with great songs like 6 Underground and Spin Spin Sugar in the 90′s. I spent the rest of the day listening to their songs and getting ready to go to a party.

The night before our friends invited us to go to a party with them, I had no idea of who what or where we would end up. I found out it was a partythrown by a friend of a friend this should be interesting. He talked it up like it was going to be huge. Bob has a knack for exaggerating so we went with a bit of skepticism. I was not really in the mood for a party but I was pleasantly surprised. No there weren’t thirteen fire pits, it wasn’t catered, and Jane’s Addiction didn’t play…but it had its moments. RD and I jokingly started to call it Bobapalooza.

We ended up in the middle of nowhere in the mountains next to a river; but it was absolutely beautiful. There was a stage built for the band, and a couple of fire pits dug into the ground. There was no running water but there was a cute little outhouse! About my third beer it started to get cold so we gathered around the fire and listened to the band. Apparently the old drummer from Jane’s Addiction did come but left after he found out there was no running water. There was mention that some members of the Grateful Dead would be there and we all scoffed. Soon we felt guilty for talking bad about Bob because right there on stage was a very large man playing a stand up electric bass, it was fricking Rob Wasserman! Not an actual member of the band but collaborated with Jerry Garcia and Bob Wier on a lot of the Grateful Dead songs and has played with some really big names. Check this video out to see how amazing he is. How the hell Bob talked him into coming to the middle of nowhere to play for all of us is beyond me. But it was so fantastic to be able to be a part of something like that. Up in the mountains…by a fire pit with my friends listening to some amazing live music. Now thats my kind of night.
