you say its your birthday

Earlier this week, I turned the big 33. Not so bad, at least not as bad as I thought it might be. I guess it gets easier as you get older, to accept your age. In your teens, you want to be an adult; in your twenties you are “too big for your britches” as my Big Daddy (grandfather) might say, and in your thirties its finally all good. I finally feel comfortable in my own skin.

It’s funny to think about all the things that have not changed about me, in all these years.

  1. I still hate monkeys, clowns, and birds.
  2. I am still not a morning person- probably will never be.
  3. I have always been hard headed.
  4. I have always and will always love art and music.
  5. I will probably never have a head for economics or politics…never have been too smart about things like that (but that does not mean that I don’t have opinions)

But some things have changed about me over the years.

  1. I finally have learned to like my hair color- its part of what makes me who I am.
  2. I don’t take life so seriously anymore, it can change at the drop of a hat and it goes by way too fast to waste your energy on negativity and the past.
  3. I have accumulated scars inside and out, they all have a story- why hide them?
  4. I have learned that it is okay to be vulnerable; you can’t be strong all the time; it’s just the way of the world.
  5. I know now that I really can make it on my own, but the most important thing I have learned is no matter how independent I want to pretend to be, I still need help from the people I love the most.

So, I’m a year older, a bit wiser, and a lot happier that I ever have been in past years. I’m actually looking forward to 34- bring it on! I have so much to look forward to, I almost cant wait.

happy birthday!!! i would kill for your hair color! when i was younger my hair was such a beautiful shade of auburn, but alas, as i have grown older it has just gotten darker and is now just boring old brown. the only red you can ever see is when i’m in the sun…

Happy Belated Birthday! I know exactly how you feel about being in your 30s. I think it is true, the older you get the more comfortable you get in your own skin, no matter what that age number might be.
