An appointment with Destiny
Written on December 6, 2006

I finally pulled my head out of my arse and went to a staffing agency for help with my job hunt. They were nice, and I was assigned to a woman who I would’nt necessarily describe as friendly, but she did her job. I gave her my resume and she led me to a room with a few computers and a couple of other poor unemployed souls taking tests. I took three skills tests for word, excel, and typing and while I didn’t feel all that great about how I did, I actually got good scores. I was given a new date (today) to come back to register with the company and to take a drug test.
Last night at about 6 I recieved a phone call from the staffing agency because a company was interested in speaking with me in a phone interview! We scheduled a time and I inquired about whom I was supposed to ask for when I was to come in to register; Destiny was her name.
The phone interview went fantastic, in my opinion, and I wish that all of my interviews had gone that well because I got a second interview! The company is a large, internationally known electronics giant, so I am very excited to be a part of their team. It is still very much up in the air so wish me luck.
Later in the day I was scheduled to go to the staffing agency to register. “I have an appointment with Destiny” I heard myself say to the woman at the front desk. I think it only took a split second for my entire body to flush bright red at my own words. I’m sure she gets that reaction all the time. A woman stood up from her cubicle to wave me over, it was the unpleasant woman from my first meeting.
Destiny was actually delightful today, must have been the holiday party they had yesterday because she was full of cheer. She shook my hand and asked how my phone interview went, and was pleased to hear the news of my second interview. Proves that you shouldn’t judge people on one meeting (or that she was happy she may be getting a commission) I can’t help but be cynical sometimes :)
After an hour of filling out paperwork and agreeing to background checks and direct deposit, I was off to take a drug test. Of course, it wouldn’t be a ride in the car without getting lost somewhere. Rugby Dude was nice enough to offer help when I text’d him I was lost on the way- always an adventure with me and my car.
On the way I figured I should probably drink some water and quickly downed a can of seltzer water and a bottle of regular. When I finally got there; I couldn’t pee! Why does my body shut down in these situations? I must have sat in that bathroom for an eternity and all I could manage was a measly teaspoon if that. I was so embarrassed! I apologised to the woman as I handed her my shameful puddle. She was very nice, and told me that was probably enough. If only Destiny could have taken my word for it that I do not do drugs!
So, after a day of adventures that turned out positively I am feeling very hopefull that things will turn out okay for me in the end. And even if I don’t get this job tomorrow; there will be another chance for me. I feel good about my decision to join up with a staffing firm, they are only there to help I might as well take them up on it. Wish me luck tomorrow!

Filed in: me.

I got a great temp job while I was in grad school through an agency. They frequently turn into permanent job offers if they’re happy with you. Mine lasted 2+ years. Good luck!
Well it looks as if everything is working out perfectly with this…very interesting about the name and what not :) Can you get me an appointment with destiny to see what I get coming?
How funny! A literal appointment with Destiny! I’m keeping my crossables crossed for you, gal!
sounds like a promising situation. congrats. but is it going to interfere with your visit with your sister if you get this job?
best of luck to you! job searches can be stressful, but eventually you’ll find what you’re looking for. i mean, you and destiny are on a first-name basis, for goodness sake!
Good luck on finding a job! Love ya!
my suggestion in the job search…sign up with as many head hunters as you can. Make sure you ask the names of the companies they are presenting you too, because companies sometimes use multiple recruiters, and you dont want multiple recruiters presenting you.
I actually got the job I am starting monday through a recruiter. They make it a bit easier and do the negoitating for you when it comes to offer time (at least mine did!)
GOOD Luck…you will do fine. Remember to just relax and make them laugh…that usually bodes well in interviews.
Good Luck Jenni. I hope everything goes well today! :)
Good Luck Jenni! :) I hope the staffing agency comes thru for you. And your right, thats what they are there for.

Hello Jenni !
Thanks for stopping by, and for your very nice comments.
Always glad to hear from you, and i wish you good luck on
your job quest.
My tag was only 6 weird things to, but you are by far the
winner of the tag game .
Ok my friend you have a nice night and enjoy a safe and great
week end !
Hi Jenni! Congrats on the offer – even if it doesn’t work out, it’s an offer.
If I remember right your sister is up here by me in the, currently frozen, state of Michigan. When you come up here don’t forget to bring warm clothes – more than you think you’ll need. Believe me, it’s pretty, but it can be pretty cold too.
